Bring Your Own Device to Work

A New IT Headache or Opportunity?

I’ve been recently assigned by my boss here at Matrix42 to lead our MDM (Mobile Device Management) marketing initiative, so I’ve been eating, sleeping and breathing MDM for the past several weeks, and as I was driving on Utah’s Interstate 15 on my way to our cool Salt Lake City office (well it’s actually in Lehi, Utah) this morning, a few thoughts came to my mind.

We recently surveyed IT professionals at the Citrix Synergy conference about the state of desktop virtualization, so we were excited to read on the VMblog that in 2016 the desktop virtualization market will approach $5 billion! According to a report issued by ABI Research, the market majority will be comprised of large enterprises in North America and Europe, looking to reduce desktop support and management costs with added benefits of enhanced business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities.

Desktop Migrations Made Easy

Guest post by Nelson Ruest

Many of us have had to face a desktop migration at some point in time. Whether it was for Windows NT, 2000, or XP, each time we perform a migration we realize just how much work is involved in such a massive project. You have to upgrade hardware, you have to prepare and test every single application in the network, you have to test and prepare an image of the new OS and most important of all, you have to save and protect end user information. These projects are massive for a reason: managing distributed endpoints is a daunting task, especially if they are not locked down and end users can modify all settings. But, that may be a thing of the past.

Software Asset Management

“The Accounting of IT”

Before entering the IT industry I got my MBA with a special focus on financial accounting and corporate taxes. In my mind there’s a clear analogy from those areas to software asset management (SAM), which I like to call the "Accounting of IT.” The problem with SAM is that IT people would prefer to have a “magic box" that does compliance reconciliation quickly and hassle-free, which unfortunately, isn’t a realistic expectation at all. Have you ever heard of an accounting system that works that way?

News round-up

(Week of June 13)

We here at Matrix42 like to keep our eyes and ears open to current happenings in the virtualization and workplace management space. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of some of the top stories that have grabbed our attention in the past week or so.

What’s a week in the world of technology without a story from Apple? Cloud is still a very hot topic, from arguments in favor of virtual machines to rebooting critical SaaS servers from Android smartphones to a full-fledged guide on managing everything virtualization within an enterprise. And though Father’s Day may be over, it’s not too late to take a look at Ken Hess’ virtualization technology wish list and contribute to the discussion.

In the past four months it seems like I’ve traveled on Sunday nearly every weekend.  I know I’m not alone on this; it’s the nature of the beast in the desktop engineering world.  Their focus is on the end-user, and in order to minimize disruption, things like software rollouts and OS patches have to happen when no one else is working: Sundays and middle of night. I don’t mind the weekend travel too much, but with Father’s Day coming up Sunday, I’m hoping I’ll be able to stay home and relax.  I’m sure a lot of other dads out there agree with me.

But I got to thinking about how our industry relates to Father’s Day.  A big theme you might hear this Sunday is to “Give Dad a Break.”  Well, our business is about giving the desktop administrator a break.

The Verdict Is In:

Virtual Desktops Here to Stay

Welcome to the brand-new Matrix42 blog!  We’re looking forward to bringing you the insights of our experienced and enthusiastic management team as we explore various topics in the world of workplace management.

Today we’re very excited to kick off the blog with some interesting results of a desktop virtualization survey we launched at Citrix Synergy San Francisco, which took place on May 25-27, 2011.  It was another great Citrix event, and a venue for a number of Citrix and partner news announcements, including our own news that we’ve released several new features for managing virtual and physical environments.

We asked enterprise IT professionals at Citrix Synergy for their opinions on the state of desktop virtualization.  The findings in a nutshell?  Desktop virtualization, at long last, is really taking off in 2011. Our survey found that the majority of organizations are either in process of deploying virtual desktops or planning to start deploying them within the next six months, and an additional eight percent said they have already finished their deployment.
