News round-up

This week: Service Store, ITIL framework, the year mobile IT was born, IT departments in 2015 and Kindle Fire.

First off, happy Friday! We’ve got some great articles in this week’s round-up, but wanted to extend yet another warm welcome to Thomas Gessner, a recent addition to our team here at Matrix42. In other company news, we announced Service Store (SP2), which provides solutions for IT management tasks. But enough about us…

It’s been a busy couple of weeks at Matrix42. Last week we announced the newest version of Enterprise Manager for Microsoft SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager) to simplify and streamline rollouts of Windows-based computer systems.

Michael Dell, founder, chairman and CEO of Dell Inc., once said “Our business is about technology, yes. But it’s also about operations and customer relationships.” That quote makes a lot of sense to us as a tech company – after all, a business is only as good as its customers say it is, right? So we’d like to take a few minutes to highlight one of our customer success stories – Magna International Inc. Magna is a leading worldwide automotive supplier that was looking for a solution to maintain and improve corporate performance and efficiency while reducing IT costs.

This week: Matrix42 enhances Microsoft SCCM, Apple tops the charts and Forrester research supports BYOD.

Today is the first official day of fall, and we’ve no shortage of news and exciting things happening both here at Matrix42 and outside in the tech and virtualization world. Last week, we teamed up with BMC Software for a webinar on Windows 7 migration. In case you missed it, we wrote a blog post on Monday with some quick points and a link to a recording of the webinar – which includes a demo – so feel free to check it out.

If you’re reading this blog, there’s a good chance you’re in IT and you’ve deployed and/or managed a large group of Windows-based computer systems. There’s an equally good chance, then, that you’ve used  a version of Microsoft SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager) to simplify and streamline these rollouts. We here at Matrix42 think SCCM is a great product; it forms the centerpiece of client systems management for thousands of IT organizations around the world.

However, MSFT SCCM is not a product without its limitations; rollouts of enterprise software packages can still take a long time to install and can be prone to errors. Today we’re very pleased to announce an enhanced Microsoft SCCM as part of our Enterprise Manager 2011 offering that helps admins use SCCM more efficiently and to its full extent than ever before. Think of it as adding chocolate to milk, or cable to TV – we’re taking a good thing and making it better.

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of participating in a webinar with our partners at BMC Software about Windows 7 migration. Given our partnership and our operating system migration solution, we have a ton of experience with easing the pain of Windows 7 migration project, a process that plagues a lot of organizations.

This week: Windows 7 webinar, the Five Biggest Desktop Virtualization Mistakes, mobile Internet and Windows 8 keynote.

The past couple weeks have been pretty busy here at Matrix42. We recently announced the Matrix42 Mobile Device Management solution to extend our workplace management capabilities to a variety of mobile devices, and just yesterday we teamed up with BMC Software for a webinar on Windows 7 migration. According to a Forrester study, referenced on the VMblog, simplifying the migration to Windows 7 is among the driving factors to get organizations to adopt an aggressive deployment approach to desktop and application virtualization. If you missed the webinar, don’t fret. Not only will we be posting a round-up blog post shortly to cover all of the important points, but a recording will be made available, too. For those of you who did tune in, if you have any questions but were unable to ask them during the Q+A session, please feel free to share them below.

We here at Matrix42 are big proponents of desktop virtualization, as you can probably tell from this blog. The benefits, nicely detailed by my colleague Patrick earlier this summer, are numerous and can provide organizations with significant competitive advantages. However, as with any technology, desktop virtualization is neither a panacea nor a band-aid, and there can be consequences if it’s not properly planned or implemented. What follows are the top five mistakes I witness IT leaders make when undertaking desktop virtualization.

This week: MDM hat trick, flash vendors, more HP news and what’s hurting the PC industry.

To get things started we’d like to take a little time to talk about us. This past week, we announced the Matrix42 Mobile Device Management solution, which we’re pretty proud of. We’ve teamed up with Airwatch to extend our workplace management capabilities to all of your favorite mobile devices including Apple iOS, Android and BlackBerry, to name a few. Matrix42 is now the only vendor to provide management for all forms of end-user devices – physical, virtual and mobile. Product marketing manager Gil Cattelain wrote a blog post about it, so go ahead and check it out. For more information you can visit our MDM landing page, too.

In my last blog post, I identified the growing IT and business challenges presented by the rising number of mobile devices proliferating the workplace. I also hinted at some new resources Matrix42 would be introducing to help combat the issues that arise with mobile complexity. Today I’m excited to announce that our mobile device management solution is officially launched. Matrix42 Mobile Device Management simplifies mobile complexity by centrally managing the entire mobile device lifecycle, from deployment and security to management and support.
