This week: Will BYOD Work for You? Mobile Devices in the Workplace and Microsoft Office for the iPad

My, how time flies. Can anyone else believe that today is the last Friday in February? Well, I’m sure you know what that means – another installment of our weekly news round-ups. We’ve got a few hot topics to cover today and then we’ll bid you adieu to go and enjoy your weekend, so let’s get started!

This week: Convergence, Delivering Dynamic Workplaces and Securing Mobile Devices.

Happy Friday everyone! I’m sure it’s become obvious that we here at Matrix42 are interested in all things BYOD and IT Consumerization. Why? These are two driving factors behind delivering what we call the “dynamic workplace” – part of our new company messaging. As you’ll see in my last blog post, our approach is very user-centric – as we feel it must be – to meet user demands for freedom, flexibility, and mobility. And, in case you missed it earlier this week, Virtual Patrick (@virtual_patrick) wrote a great post on the convergence of laptop and desktop PCs with mobile devices and virtualization. Maybe it’s just because Valentine’s Day was this week, but that sounds like a match made in tech heaven to me! Check it out here and let us know what you think. Now that we’ve got those two things crossed off our list, on to the news of this week…

As users are getting more and more liberated through different kinds of workstyles, IT technologies are merging together. IT consumerization and BYOD will be two main drivers. From my perspective, three major topics are converging:

The fundamental tenets of employment – and the business world in general – haven’t changed: employees want to be productive and do the best job they can. What has changed is the way today’s professionals work – they’re at the office, they’re on the road, and they’re at home. They are no longer tethered to their office desk from 9-5; they work wherever, whenever and on whichever device they prefer. The acronyms BYOD and CoIT are being discussed around a lot these days, but this is no passing trend. This is the new work standard, what we call the dynamic workplace – and it could be physical, mobile, or virtual.

Another week has come and gone, but before we say goodbye for the weekend, we’d like to share with you a few headlines that caught our eye this week. To start, we’ve got a follow-up blog post to last week’s “Attracting and retaining the best employees” from Andreas Jacob (@andreasjacob42), so be sure to check out his latest for 5 tips for successfully integrating BYOD into your IT service management

We’ve written a lot here about Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiatives and the impact they have on IT departments. Last week I wrote about BYOD as a perk many companies are offering to attract and retain top job candidates. In fact, 60 percent of companies already are enabling BYOD, according to a July 2011 Forrester Research survey. However, many companies are still overwhelmed by the tablets and smartphones proliferating their offices and it‘s with those folks in mind that I submit the following five tips for integrating BYOD into overall IT service management.

This week: All about BYOD and CoIT.

As our American readers know, yesterday was Groundhog Day, and since Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, we’re in for six more weeks of winter. And lucky for you, we’ve got more than six more weeks of news round-ups (and then some!) Before we begin, we want to give you a heads-up that we’ve got some exciting things brewing at Matrix42, so be sure to check back on the blog in the next week or so.

Attracting and retaining the best employees

How advanced IT service management improves employee satisfaction and builds better relationships

Even in a down economy, companies still fiercely compete for the most qualified candidates. These top-notch job-seekers are fortunate to have options, and they also have high expectations of their future employer. While salary and benefits remain important, other factors have gained importance recently: working atmosphere, flexibility and, now more than ever, the tech equipment they’ll be using.
